Biography
Since a child I have found it easy and enjoyable to sketch, but didn’t start painting until adulthood when I began travelling. Largely self-taught, I first showed some work at the Swan Hill Regional Gallery’s Inaugural Art Exhibition, where I was invited to hold a solo exhibition. Quite overawed by this, the idea took some getting used to. The Swan Hill Regional Gallery purchased one of my paintings, now in its permanent collection.
I married and didn’t paint much when our children were growing, but after they left home my husband and I retired to Inverloch on the south coast of Victoria, an area full of beautiful subject matter for an artist, confirmed by the number of creative people who are located in the area. I joined the Bass Coast Artists Society and Colin and I have both worked on the committee for many years. I am also a member of the Artists Society of Phillip Island.
I work mainly in acrylics as its rapid drying quality suits my style, but I also love charcoal and, less often oil and pastel.
With landscapes and seascapes I try to capture the mood of a scene or particular light or weather conditions. Living in South Gippsland I find the beautiful landscape is a feast and the ever-changing seascape with its beautiful shapes, the colours of rocks and ancient cliff formations, and the colour and movement of the ocean quite absorbing. Light, wind, colour and the tang of the salt air are all so good for the soul.
Capturing people – and pets - doing ordinary things is a joy. I love to include them in paintings as often as I can. What are they thinking as they walk along the beach or a bush track? What makes people burst with laughter over coffee with friends? Body language is everything.
Pet Portraits
A lifelong passion for animals means I particularly love to paint our four-legged friends, who have so much to offer us. Capturing the particular personality of the animal is all-important in my paintings, so that no two of the same breed ever look exactly alike. I welcome commissions, so feel free to contact me for a quote. hazecolin02@gmail.com or phone 03 5674 2892.
